Chapter 17

We made our way onto the ferry, and I found a seat beside a handful of colorfully dressed tourists. A fit older couple, dressed in tight biking shorts, held their bikes steady as they were perched on the long bench. There was only one car on the ferry, so I had a clear view of the water. Piper seemed to enjoy the wind that ruffled her fur, and she sniffed the air that carried the scent of hot dogs, seaweed, and sunscreen. She gave a sharp bark when a seagull dived overhead to snatch a piece of popcorn from the deck, and she strained at her leash to follow the bird. I held on tight and returned the smile that a few passengers gave us. The ride across the bay only took about ten minutes, but the closer we got to the dock, the more reluctant I was about going to work. I was worried I wouldn’t find anything about the new Mrs. Skyler—but I was also worried about what I should do if I did find something.

After we disembarked from the ferry, Piper pulled me toward our destination at a faster pace than I wanted to walk. She must have remembered the treats Marge always gave her. “Slow down, Piper. You can’t possibly be hungry.”

She twisted her head and glanced at me before she turned and pulled the leash even harder. Instead of trying to correct her behavior like I knew I should, I picked up my pace to keep up. Once we arrived at the huge stuccoed house painted a light cinnamon color, I pulled the key from my purse and climbed the spiral wrought-iron staircase to the small second-floor balcony. Piper raced by and knocked me off balance, so I grabbed the railing to keep from falling. She seemed to be in a hurry to get inside. I threw the French doors wide open to let the sea breeze blow through the office, and Piper rushed through the office and into the hallway. After barking a couple of times, she plopped down on the fluffy dog bed beneath my desk.

Thinking that maybe Piper was trying to tell me that someone was in the house, I listened at the top of the stairs for a couple of minutes but didn’t hear a sound. What is up with her? After filling her water dish in the bathroom next to my office, I checked the pile of mail and looked for any notes or phone messages that needed immediate attention. Everything looked straightforward. Once I made sure Marge wasn’t in the house, I threw back my shoulders, took a deep breath, and headed to the Skylers’ private quarters, trying to ignore the tingling at the base of my skull.

I hollered hello a few times as I walked into the master suite, not wanting to surprise anyone, but the house remained quiet. Flipping on the crystal chandelier lights that hung in the middle of the master closet, I found Mrs. Skyler had moved in a few of her belongings.
